Aether: Athletic Applications

Part I: How it’s Been Done

First, a basic thought exercise. If you’ve clicked any of the links I provided, then you know that the human body already makes use of natural energy in order to function. Be it the chakra system in India, or Qi (pronounced “chi”) in China, or one of the many other energetic structures found around the world, there are thousands of years of study and practice which highlight the links between the energy our body makes use of and our physical/emotional well-being.

If you can accumulate and circulate energy proficiently, you will feel a “surge” that is much like the exhilaration you get after a great workout. You will be in a better mood, you’ll feel healthier, and each moment will have this “higher quality” that is hard to define.

At the far end of the spectrum you see this utilized by Shaolin monks, demonstrated through their otherworldly feats. Holding the body up with a single finger, breaking bricks with a slap of the palm, or withstanding strikes that would prove dangerous for others (like, say, breaking a wooden staff over your crotch and being lifted by spears) — these are off-limits to your typical human.

For those who didn’t click, the one finger handstand was done by a 91 year old man, and the brick was broken by a 14 year old boy. How about that. For those who do not believe bricks are hard, how about cinderblocks?

There’s no secret to this. The monks themselves maintain that all of this is due to both their conditioning and their utilization of Qi. Through breathing exercises and meditation the monks are able to “charge” their bodies with excess energy, allowing it greater functioning than normal. The West (that is, us) have mostly ignored this, and reinterpreted this as “rigorous physical training.” That’s it. Nothing special.

Let’s listen to the people who are actually doing the feats. Let’s incorporate energy into our training curriculum and see how much easier everything becomes.
